Roots Speak
This class uses a hybrid vocabulary system.
ROOTS
Scholars are expected to learn the classical roots (both Greek and Latin) of words in order to better understand the meaning of new words across content areas. This is best accomplished by using the 1234 Vocabulary system (based on SIOP methods). I do not collect the cards, but each scholar is required to have them in order to study or to use them for review games.
SPEAK
Scholars are expected to learn the common terms in academic language used across content areas as well as state and national assessments. I called that section of my "word wall" the ACADEMICALLY SPEAKING section. 5 to 8 words are assigned for each quiz. Scholars who are unfamiliar with these words should create 1234 vocabulary cards for those as well.
Rather than refer to it as the Roots and Academically Speaking portion of your word wall quiz, it was shortened to "Root Speak Quiz" in the grade book and the name just stuck.
